In making this award, our judges were looking for the organisation that has made the most innovative changes to its business to reduce its impact on the environment.
The quality of nominations was excellent, and our final two were so close that it didn’t seem right to select either one or the other, and therefore our judges decided to jointly award this category to both GenScript and to Thermo Fisher.
Judges were impressed by GenScript’s tree planting programme, in which the company donates a tree for every order from a customer that opts into its paperless order programme. As a result, the company has planted over 90,000 trees in partnership with American Forests - a number that is still set to grow.
And Thermo Fisher have been awarded for their efforts to reduce waste in the sector. For decades, expanded polystyrene coolers have been the preferred packaging for chilled products that are sensitive and must be shipped cold. In its efforts to reduce unrecyclable waste, Thermo Fisher developed a 100% paper alternative which is as effective as expanded polystyrene but it’s entirely recyclable. As a result, for every 10,000 paper-based coolers the company ships, more than 6,500 cubic feet of expanded polystyrene is kept out of landfill.
Dr Andrew Chalmers, founder of CiteAb, said: “This was a brand new category to recognise the increased global concern about the future of the planet and our natural environment, and the responsibility of the sector to reduce the impact it has. Both GenScript and Thermo Fisher have made significant improvements to the impact of their businesses through their initiatives, and their actions serve as a fantastic example to the wider life sciences community. Congratulations to both companies.”
