Significant Individual Impact Award

Will Howat

In this category, we celebrate an individual in the life science sector who has made a meaningful impact over the course of their career, or through a single transformative project.

Congratulations to Will Howat, winner of the Award for Significant Individual Impact.

With 48 publications to his name, including work in leading journals such as Science and Nature, Will has built an impressive career spanning research, industry, and technical innovation. He has held leadership roles in molecular pathology at AstraZeneca and in ISH research at CRUK CI, and currently serves as Vice President of Validation and Technical Quality at Abcam.

At Abcam, Will has been instrumental in establishing rigorous standards for antibody validation and characterisation. His work has supported the development of more than 1,000 recombinant antibodies each year, alongside innovations in knock-out cell specificity testing and biophysical quality control. He has also helped identify and remove thousands of underperforming products, strengthening quality standards across the portfolio.

A strong advocate for digital pathology, Will has also contributed to the development of AI-based models for IHC tissue recognition.

CiteAb CEO Andrew Chalmers said:

"Antibody validation is a field we care deeply about, and Will has been a driving force in moving it forward. I have seen how his work at Abcam makes a real difference to scientists relying on research antibodies every day, and is sure to have created significant impact in the broader life science field. I was delighted when I heard the judges had selected him to win this year's award and send my congratulations to him and his team."
